Milton to open NCAA cross-country season in Stillwater

Friday 24th September 2010

FELICITY Milton opens her cross-country season this Saturday (25th September) as the Oklahoma State University’s men’s and women’s cross country teams host the 74th Annual Cowboy Jamboree at the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater continuing the tradition of holding the oldest consecutively run cross country race in America.

British international, Milton, (23) from Exton in Rutland beginning her second year representing the Cowgirls is looking forward to the challenge:
“We’ve got a race plan. I think the big thing for me is learning to race as a pack. I’m pretty new to the scene, really. Certainly racing as part of a team is nothing I’ve done before. It’s going to be a race simulation for the nationals, which we’re hoping to make as a team.”

“It’s nice to be at home, especially with work and everything. It’s pretty busy at the minute. Everyone knows the Jamboree. It’s the oldest in the U.S., so it’s a big meet. That’s another pressure, but it’s a pressure to do well."

Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon, USA

Saturday 12th June 2010 – Day 4

GREAT Britain’s Charlotte Browning has completed the unique double of winning the national collegiate indoor mile and 1500m outdoor titles with victory at the 2010 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Oregon.

The 22-year-old Aldershot, Farnham & District athlete running in the orange and black of the Florida Gators team clocked a time of 4:15.84 to secure victory ahead of Gabriele Anderson (Minnesota) 4:16.25 and third placed Jordan Hasey (Oregon) 4:16.43.

A delighted Browning commented afterwards: “I didn’t think it was going to happen, this is one of the hardest races of the season and my career, it was a real nerve-racking race right to the end but I’m really pleased.”

Browning follows in the footsteps of fellow ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athlete Hannah England who won double gold over the mile and 1500m representing Florida State University in 2008.

In the men’s 1500m final Lee Emanuel (University of New Mexico), the NCAA indoor Mile champion, finished 6th having led for most of the race until the last 200 metres when three members of the Oregon team passed him to take one, two and three. Emanuel ran a time of 3:48.61 as Andrew Wheating won gold in 3:47.94.

Gerald Phiri (Texas A&M) finished in eighth place in the final of the men's 200m clocking a time of 20.91secs.

Phiri edged out of the medals in Eugene

Hayward Field, Eugene, Oregon, USA

Friday 11th June 2010 – Day 3

GERALD Phiri (Texas A&M) placed fourth in a wind-aided 10.20secs in the final of the men’s 100m narrowly missing out on a podium place on Day 3 of competition at the 2010 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Oregon held in front of a record sell-out crowd of 11,972 at Hayward Field.

Jeff Demps (Florida), America's fastest gridiron football player, won the title clocking a time of 9.96secs adding the outdoor gold to his NCAA 60m indoor victory in March.

This was Demp’s first sub-10-second clocking but will not count as an official lifetime best because it was aided by a 2.5mph wind. He finished well ahead of runner-up Rondell Sorrillo (10.09) of Kentucky and bronze medallist Luther Ambrose (Louisiana-Monroe) 10.12.

Chris Gowell (Baylor) earned the third All-America honour of his collegiate career with a seventh place finish in the men’s 800m final. In a stellar field, Gowell chased the field through the first lap, and made a late sprint into seventh place clocking a time of 1:47.67. Andrew Wheating completed victory for the host team of Oregon with a mark of 1:45.69.

ON the final day of competition in the West and East Prelims there was further success for British student athletes as they rubber-stamped their ticket for next months 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships that take place in Eugene (10th-13th June).

In the men’s 3,000m steeplechase held over from the previous day due to heavy rain, Butler’s Rob Mullett finished in 16th place in 8:51.82 with team mate Steve Lisgo 35th in 9:12.51 outside of the top twelve qualifiers for Eugene.
Fellow Lobos David Bishop missed out by two places in 14th with a time of 3:43.77, whilst, Ross Millington clocked 3:48.64 to secure 20th place overall.

There was huge disappointment for New Mexico’s Rory Fraser missing out on qualification by a margin of just 0.24secs in the men’s 5,000m finishing 13th in 14:10.47. Tulsa's Lewis Timmins finished 23rd in 14:32.61.

On the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Bingham, the 24-year-old former Loughborough-based sprinter clocked a time of 46.08secs on his season debut as Borlee claimed victory in 44.89 - a mark that ranks in the top 10 best performances in the NCAA this season.

Senior breaks New Mexico steeplechase record

Saturday 1st May 2010

FORMER Loughborough student Ruth Senior, the 2009 British Universities champion broke the University of New Mexico record over the 3,000m steeplechase with a lifetime best of 10mins 09.14secs at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational at Stanford, California.

The 22-year-old City of Norwich athlete surpassed the old record (10:38.20) set in 2008 by American Kara Henry by 29 seconds.

"I was trying not to think about the time I just tried to go out and run," Senior said. "I was actually a little disappointed I thought I would run faster. But I really can't complain. My old PB was four years old so it feels good to better that. It feels good to get the first one out of the way, the steeple is a hard race to run."

Senior's previous personal best in the event was 10:12.50, set at the World Junior Championships.

In his first outdoor meeting of the season Rory Fraser (OWLS) ran a time of 14:04.07 in the 5,000m.
