Makau and Kebede win rain-swept Berlin Marathon

Sunday 26th September 2010

PATRICK Makau of Kenya and Aberu Kebede representing Ethiopia won the realr Berlin Marathon, the latest round of the World Marathon Majors Series, held in rain-swept conditions in the German capital.

Makau prevailed in a time of two hours five minutes and eight seconds to defeat fellow Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai by just two seconds in a sprint finish, with Ethiopia's Bazu Worku a further 15 seconds adrift.

There had been hopes of attacking Haile Gebrselassie's world record of 2:03:59 on the flat, fast course, but those were ended by cold, wet and foggy conditions.

"Every time I have been here I have won," said 25-year-old Makau, referring to his brace of victories at the Vattenfall Berlin half marathons before stepping up to the longer distance 18 months ago.

"Of course due to the weather it affected our pace and that was why it was slow."

Ethiopia's Aberu Kebede won the women's race in a personal best of 2:23:58. Compatriot Bezunesh Bekele finished exactly a minute behind with Japan's Tomo Morimoto third.

Perfect 10 as Charnwood retain Midlands relays title

2010 Saucony Midlands AAA Men's 6 Stage & Women's 4 Stage Territorial Road Relays Championships

Sutton Park, Birmingham

Saturday 25th September 2010

CHARNWOOD's women’s team underlined their position as the United Kingdom’s most successful relay squad of the past decade as the Loughborough-based club comfortably retained their Saucony Midlands AAA 4-Stage Territorial Road Relays title for the sixth consecutive year securing a remarkable tenth success in the event over their 35-year history in fine style claiming victory as with the past three-years over Bristol & West at Birmingham’s Sutton Park.

The team comprising of British internationals Hannah Whitmore, Tara Krzywicki and Jane Potter combined with Gemma Hillier crossed the line with a combined time of one hour 28 seconds ensuring victory by a margin of over half-a-minute clear of their West Country rivals with Coventry Godiva Harriers completing the podium places.

Whitmore set the team on their way, having returned to racing at the recent adidas women’s 5k in Hyde Park the 26-year-old clocked an opening stage of 14:28 to give Charnwood an early lead with Gloucester in second.

On stage two former United Kingdom 3,000m steeplechase record-holder Tina Brown set the fastest overall individual time with 14:24 to push Coventry into a narrow lead as Charnwood with Loughborough graduate Gemma Hillier having recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in South Africa clocking 16:04 to keep Charnwood in the title chase in second.

Jane Potter, as with Whitmore a world cross-country representative for Team GB in Amman 2009, on the penultimate stage set a time of 15:07 restoring Charnwood’s advantage ahead of Bristol with Coventry now in third to give Tara Krzywicki the platform to secure the victory.

Krzywicki lined-up for the defending champions on the anchor leg, just in time too! as the 36-year-old following an epic journey to make the start line in Birmingham having been held up in traffic behind a large load on the M6 arriving with little or no time to warm-up went virtually straight out of the car and down to the start.

Full credit is due however as Krzywicki set the third fastest time of the day with 14:49 to secure the Loughborough club a remarkable sixth straight victory and a tenth title win in their history.

Bristol & West (1:01:00) finished runners-up with Coventry Godiva Harriers (1:02:18) taking third, whilst, the Charnwood ‘B’ squad of Amber Magee (17:26), Beverley Gray (16:10), Clare McKittrick (16:00) and Clare Mensley (16:57) finished 9th with a combined time of 1:06.33.

Charnwood team manager Sarah Whitmore was delighted with the performance commenting: “The team did really well today as most of them are just returning from various illness and injuries. We nearly didn't have a 4th leg runner as Tara was stuck in traffic behind a wide load on the M6 and although was phoning me with their progress - arrived with just under 5 minutes before she was due to run. All credit to Tara for then running the 3rd fastest leg of the day.”

Loughborough University student Emily Pidgeon, a week after making her debut over the half marathon at the Bupa Great North Run clocked a individual stage time of 15:00 as Stroud & District finished 13th overall, whilst, Loughborough Alumni Sarah Bull (16:13) anchored Notts AC to 8th place.

In the Men’s 6-Stage race there was an equally impressive victory for Notts AC as their team of Rob Keal, Matt Blunden, Tim Hartley, Jonathan Thewis, Martin Whitehouse and Bruce Raeside claimed victory in a time of 1:48.25 ahead of the West Midlands powerhouse clubs Tipton Harriers and Birchfield Harriers.

The Leicester Coritanian team secured a fine top-ten finish with the team of Gordon Lee, Ashley Sabin, Gareth Deacon, Simon Cotton, Derek Guess and winner of the recent Experian Nottingham Marathon Tommy Hughes crossing the line in a combined time of 1:55:52.

Tom Meakin led the OWLS to a solid 12th place overall with their squad of Paul Miles, Daniel Hallam, Tom Bell, Paul Richardson and Lewis Smart finishing in 1:56:17.

Charnwood AC finished inside the top-twenty places (2:00.24) with their team of Mark Couldwell, Steve Mears, Paul Harmer, Mark Crofts, Ben Lacey and Scott Baxter.

William Clapp combined with Sean Fenwick, Andy Robinson, Matt Driver, Martin Gore and Adam Brooks to anchor Harborough AC to 28th place overall in 2:04.23.

The Charnwood ‘B’ team of Philip Wharton, Kevin Pye, George Buttery, Sam Densham, Glen North and Michael Brind finished in 37th place as the Leicester Coritanian ‘B’ squad of Craig Sabin, Liam Phelan, Craig Austin, Andy Hart, Robin Crookes and Danny Keating finished one place adrift in 38th.

Hermitage Harriers claimed 47th place with their team of Alastair Watson, Andy Ashton, Darren Wilson, Matt Hardy, Darren Weston and Shaun Coulton.

Report by Mark Woolley.

In the women’s race Team England filled the top three positions as Bristol half-marathon winner Claire Hallissey, the 27-year-old representing Bristol & West AC in Cardiff preparing for November's ING New York Marathon claimed victory in 33:01, crossing the line fifteen seconds clear of the ever-improving Gemma Steel (Charnwood) who finished runner-up with a new lifetime best of 33:16 ahead of Loughborough University graduate Laura Kenney (Royal Sutton Coldfield), third in 33:41.

Makaza and Harrison win IAU World 50km titles

Sunday 29th August 2010

COLLEN Makaza of Zimbabwe and Sue Harrison representing Team England won the IAU World 50km individual titles in Galway, Ireland, this following very impressive performances.

The Radisson Blu Galway City Marathon (26.2 miles) was run in conjunction with the IAU World 50km (31 miles) Trophy Final.

The race consisted of two Half Marathon loops followed by four short loops around the centre of the city to complete the 50km. The course was undulating but with lengthy flat sections. The most challenging part of the course was the hill present at 13km (and again at 34km) that was a kilometre long.

Zimbabwean athlete Collen Makaza recorded a unique double by winning both the marathon and the World 50km crown, as Leamington’s Sue Harrison also doubled up successfully in the women’s category.

Makaza crossed the line in 2:47.21 to take victory ahead of South African Sandile Ngunuzza and Michael Wardian of the USA with the England team of Julian Rendall, 10th in 3:09:19, Paul Fernandez 13th in 3:13:00 and Tim Doran on his international debut finishing 18th in 3:20:17.

Harrison finished in an impressive 15th place overall in a time of 3:15:42 to secure the women’s title ahead of Italian Andrea Anselmi with compatriots Helen Taranowski finishing 22nd in 3:37:42 and Adela Salt 23rd in 3:40:09.

There were 13 selection races held from Canada and Argentina to Japan and Australia to select athletes for the World Trophy Final. The criteria for selection included a sub 3:20 (men) and sub 3:50 (women) run. The winners of the series races were automatically selected and following the preliminary selections the fastest finishers were invited until the selection pool was filled. In addition a few runners had invitations extended on the basis of their marathon times.

Friday 27th August 2010

RUNBRITAIN have announced the launch of the 2011 runbritain Grand Prix series linking five of Britain's leading road races for a total prize purse in excess of £55,000.

The prize fund announced for the Grand prix series will be available for athletes eligible to compete for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and will be awarded on a points-for-places system.

Athletes finishing in the top 250 male or female finishers in any of the series' races will receive points with their best four performances out of five scoring opportunities counting towards the final standings.
The races involved in the 2011 Grand Prix series are:
Reading Half Marathon – Sunday 20th March
Bristol 10k – Sunday 15th May
BUPA London 10,000 – Monday 30th May
Admiral Swansea Bay 10k - Sunday 25th September
EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon – Sunday 23rd October

runbritain MD, Geoff Wightman said "This is a pilot format and in future years we will aim to extend the width and depth of the runbritain grand prix series. We want to raise the standards of domestic race fields and put in the incentives and quality racing opportunities that will enable Brits to step up.

"All of these are very well organised races, with PB opportunities. As well as currently backing home-grown runners, they have been strong supporters of all runbritain initiatives so far this year and have agreed to hold back places for grand prix scorers.

More information on the series including the structure of time bonuses can we seen at www.runbritain.com/grandprix/

(Incorp. Leicestershire County Championships)

Whitwick, Leicestershire

Sunday 15th August 2010

ENGLAND international Gemma Steel stepped out of her front door jogged down to the start line and then promptly raced around her local 10k course to smash the 2008 record set by Felicity Milton en-route to collecting the Leicestershire County Championship title by finishing in second place overall in the process – a Sunday morning well spent!

The 24-year-old representing Charnwood AC has been in sparkling form over the 10k distance this year setting a lifetime best of 33:29 at the national championships in Bristol back in May and then subsequently leading the Team England challenge at the Berlin Vattenfall City-Night event finishing runner-up to the two-time London Marathon champion Irina Mikitenko.

Steel steamed over the finish line along the disused Charnwood Forest Railway in Whitwick like an express train to take victory in the women’s race with a time of 34:34 well ahead of Barrow’s Catherine Draper (40:11) and third placed Rachel Swan of Hinckley (46:11).

In the men’s race David Lipscomb prevailed for the OWLS with a time of 34:29 to claim his first major championship title and road-race victory improving his previous lifetime best of 36:19 set in race twelve months ago. The vastly experienced Gareth Deacon representing Leicester Coritanians secured second place twenty-three seconds adrift of the leader with Shrewsbury’s Tim Pillow third (36:42).

GEMMA Steel’s fine run of form continued with a gun-to-tape victory at the challenging Meerbrook 15k race near Leek, Staffordshire.

Having finished runner-up to the two-time London Marathon champion Irina Mikitenko at the Vattenfall City-Night 10km in Berlin last month when representing Team England, the 24-year-old Charnwood athlete set a lifetime best over the rarely run 15k distance setting a course-record time of 56mins 42secs to secure the win ahead of Telford’s Claire Martin, second in 1:00.05, and third placed Sarah Johnson (1:00.57) of Trentham Runners.

Steel’s winning margin sliced over five minutes off the previous course-record.

Kenyan Edwin Kipkorir, winner of the recent Bupa Great North 10k in Sunderland, prevailed in a very high quality men’s race clocking a time of 49:15 ahead of course record-holder, Great Britain’s Andi Jones, who was returning to racing having been forced to pull-out of the SPAR European Championships marathon in Barcelona the previous week sighting heat exhaustion.

Jones finished runner-up in 49:36 with Birchfield Harrier Jean Burundi third in 54:23 ahead of Beaumont Running Club’s Philip Chritchlow, fourth in 54:48, and fifth placed Australian John Dutton (55:10).

David Moorcroft leads University team for Anthony Nolan charity at round Leicester relay

Wednesday 4th August 2010

FORMER 5,000m world record holder David Moorcroft, OBE, is heading up a Loughborough University team competing in the Round Leicester Relay for Anthony Nolan, the charity that takes back lives from leukaemia by recruiting to and managing the UK’s most successful bone marrow register.

Moorcroft, the UK Athletics President and Loughborough PE and Sports Science graduate, is part of a team of staff, research students and alumni that includes former English National XC winner Angela Newport and current GB XC Team member Sonia Samuels.

The 13-strong University team will complete the 92-mile relay on Sunday 26th September to raise awareness of the importance of the Anthony Nolan charity that relies on public donations to continue saving lives.

University staff and members of local club Barrow Runners have organised the challenge in support of Dean of Engineering, Steve Rothberg who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia. This follows on from a donor drive for Anthony Nolan at the University in May that attracted the highest number of recruits from any UK university to date. Since then, a donor has been found for Steve, however there are 1,400 adults and children in the UK and 16,000 people worldwide still in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Now in its 21st year, the Round Leicester Relay roughly follows the Leicester Round footpath taking in some of the county's landmarks such as the Iron Age fort at Burrough Hill, Bosworth Battlefield, Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill. In addition to competing for Loughborough University, David Moorcroft will be presenting the prizes at Mowmacre Hill School Sports Hall, Tedworth Green, Leicester at approximately 6.30pm.

Loughborough University Vice Chancellor, Professor Shirley Pearce, said: “Bringing together a team of past and present staff and students from the University through a sporting challenge is a fantastic way to support the Anthony Nolan charity.” She continues, “This is such a worthy cause that has a personal meaning to so many of us at Loughborough, as a consequence of Steve Rothberg’s engagement with the Trust, and it is great to see such support from across the University including our alumni network.
Raeside and Mensley win Huncote 5

Wednesday 4th August 2010

BRUCE Raeside (Notts AC) and Clare Mensley (Charnwood) were the individual winners of the penultimate race of the Leicestershire Summer Road Running League campaign staged over the tough and demanding Joy Cann Memorial 5 mile course in Huncote.

In the race that attracted a record field of over 550 runners, held in memory of Huncote Harrier Joy Cann and has raised over £12,000 for local charities Scotland’s Bruce Raeside, the 28-year-old coached by Trevor Muxlow, continued his fine run of victories on the roads in 2010 completing his third win over the 5 mile distance having won at Long Eaton and Nottingham this summer crossing the line over the testing course surrounding Narborough in a time of 24mins 27secs finishing just six seconds outside of the course-record well over a minute clear of the highly talented middle-distance teenager Danny Hallam (OWLS) with Nigel Stirk (Leicester Coritanians) third.

Clare Mensley completed victory in the women’s race outpacing Catherine Draper (Barrow Runners) by a margin of just five seconds over the line as the 22-year-old Loughborough University student, part of Charnwood’s hugely successful relay squad and winner of the Ashby 5 LRRL winter league race back in January, clocked a time of 29:51 with Nicola Roder (Leicester TRI) securing third in 30:23.

Report by Mark Woolley.

The final fixture of the 2010 LRRL Summer League is the John Fraser 10 Mile that takes place on Sunday 5th September - Start time 10.30am.

20th SPAR European Athletics Championships

Olympic Stadium, Barcelona

Sunday 1st August 2010 – Men’s Marathon

VIKTOR Rothlin of Switzerland returned from major health problems to improve on his silver medal four-years ago to win the men's European marathon title in Barcelona.

The 35-year-old sixth placer in the 2008 Beijing Olympics just a year after developing thrombosis which led to a pulmonary embolism and after having had heel surgery broke clear of the leading pack at the 15 miles point of the race and never looked back running solo for the vast majority of the race to cross the finish line in a time of 2hrs 15mins 31secs.

The gold medallist in Gothenburg 2006, Italy's Stefano Baldini, was forced to pull out at halfway as Spain’s Jose Manuel Martinez, the 2002 European Championships 10,000m gold medallist, to the delight of the large home crowd lining the streets of the Catalan capital on a very warm morning secured silver in 2:17.50 with Russian Dmitriy Safronov taking bronze in 2:18.16.

Channel Islander Lee Merrien led the British challenge with an impressive eighth place finish clocking 2:20.42 in only his second ever race over the distance.

Dave Webb finished 16th in 2:23.04, with Commonwealth bronze medallist Dan Robinson, 19th in 2:24.06, followed by Ben Moreau, 24th 2:27.08 and Martin Williams, 28th in 2:28.30. Andi Jones failed to finish.

Report by Mark Woolley.

Olympic Stadium, Barcelona

Saturday 31st July 2010 – Women’s Marathon

ZIVILE Balciunaite representing Lithuania won the women's marathon title at the 20th European Athletics Championships over a picturesque Barcelona city centre course.

Balciunaite (31), clocked a time of 2hrs 31mins 14secs to improve on her fourth place in Gothenburg 2006, this following a runaway victory from the 25k point finishing ahead of Russian Nailya Yulamanova (2:32.15) and Italian Anna Incerti (2:32.48).

Romania’s Lidia Simon, the 2001 world champion in Edmonton, led the race up to the halfway point, however, the 36-year-old began to slow heading into the second half leaving Balciunaite to make her decisive move.

Michelle Ross-Cope lead the Greta Britain squad to a fine team bronze as the City of Stoke athlete came home in 2:38.45, followed by compatriot Susan Partridge, just 22 seconds behind in 2:39.07.

Holly Rush (2:42.44) and Helen Decker (2:43.00) were the next two over the line in 20th and 21st place, whilst, Rebecca Robinson (2:44.06) and Jo Wilkinson (2:44.11) completed the British team finishing in 24th and 25th place respectively to gain the podium place.

2010 International Snowdon Race

Friday 30th July 2010

THE 2010 International Snowdon Race / Ras-yr-Wyddfa lived up to all expectations on Saturday (24th July) as the field took on some of the worst conditions that the event has had to endure in recent years.

The athletes were greeted with mist and light rain as they took to the start line at 2pm, however these conditions were nothing compared to what awaited them on the upper slopes of Snowdon, with strong winds and driving rain awaiting them at the summit, some 5 miles away and at an elevation of over 3500 feet.

Four Leicestershire athletes took up this years challenge with Fleckney & Kibworth’s Adam Taylor, turning out in the colours of his second claim club Saddleworth, producing arguably his best performance over the fells to date with an outstanding 33rd place overall and placing 9th in the open event which took place alongside the main international head-to-head. Taylor took the summit in 52:15 and upon his return to Lanberis stopped the clock at 1:20:29. The other county runners were Ian Gladwell of West End Runners in 1hr 32min 14sec followed by Keith Markley (Wigston Phoenix) in 1.51.45 and Markley’s clubmate Stuart Fry, in 2.03.55.

Parc Padarn, the location for the race start, was described as one of the most colourful and best presented in years and despite the weather conditions a huge crowd of spectators gathered to watch the race start. In 2009 tragedy struck on the mountain as local man Mark Lear lost his life during the race. The anniversary of this sad event was marked by a minutes silence at five minutes to two, and was immaculately respected by the runners and crowd.

The event was one of great anticipation with the occasion of Kenny Stuart’s 1985 course record being marked with the man himself acting as race starter and guest of honour at the evening presentation, and once respects had been paid it was time to turn attentions to racing.

Also present was Ireland’s Robbie Bryson, the summit record holder of an amazing 39 min and 47 secs and Robbie was also running the race. Add into the fold the first African competitor in the shape of Wilson Chemweno, and a little bit of Welsh rain, and this one was always going to be special.

Stuart got the runners underway at bang on two o'clock and we were soon reminded of why this race is known as the International Snowdon race with the first 40 - 50 runners a sea of English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Danish and Italian vests. But it was Kenyan Chemweno who grasped the nettle as the 483 starters made their way onto the mountain and he established a sizeable lead by halfway. Behind Italian Rolando Piana was chasing hard, and as they approached Allt Goch, some three quarters into the ascent, the strongman from Italy passed Chemweno as the weather conditions began to take their toll on the African athlete.

Tucked in behind was 18 year-old Scotsman Robbie Simpson, and as events unfolded he was about to take his chance for glory as they turned for the return trip to Llanberis. As Piana summited in first place he inextricably took the wrong path to Rhyd Ddu, a mistake that was to lose him the race, Wilson was second at the top with Simpson third.

Times on top of the mountain were understandably not close to Bryson’s mark, however after the Italian’s mishap Wilson gallantly led the high-quality field as they headed for home. Unfortunately it was the tricky rocks of this famous mountain, made lethally wet by the driving rain, which were to be the African’s undoing as the British and Italian mountain men took their dive for the descent – and the young Scot would now revel in the conditions.

He quickly caught Chemweno and over the ensuing 5 miles Simpson opened up a sizeable gap on the older and hugely more experienced chasers. Amongst them three-time winner Ian Holmes, but he and the rest of the Italian and English internationals were unable to catch the Deeside youngster.

"I actually on knew that I had won as I rounded the finish straight and saw the ribbon across the line", he said, "I knew that they (Chemweno and Piana) were ahead at the top, but after I passed Wilson I was then expecting Piana to come into sight. When I hadn't caught him by half-way bridge I was thinking how fast is he going, as I thought that I was going really well! The support was amazing, it was such a great race for me. It feels great to win this race, especially at my first attempt too.”

The truth was to all unfold as the tales were told back at the finish area and it fellow Italian Alex Baldaccini who was to fly the Italian flag on the podium, outsprinting Ian Holmes for second by the slenderest of margins. It was to be a tough baptism on Snowdon for Kenyan Chemweno, who eventually finished in seventh place, however this man will never be forgotten as a possible trail-blazer for the African nation in British mountain racing, though when asked if he himself would be back again to race he simply said, "I don't think so, I hated coming down!"

Simpson’s time of 1:07:58 will not trouble the record books, however it will go down of the one of the greatest wins on this mountain.

First Welsman home was Andy Davies in 9th position, England easily took the team prize as Holmes was backed up by Richard Baker in 5th and Danny Hope in 6th . Shrewsbury's Steven Cale won the Open prize for non-international competitors in 10th place and Eryri Harriers Iain Ridgway, Matt Fortes and Hugh Connell secured a highly popular team win for the local club.

It was to be double delight for the Scottish team as Catriona Buchanan won the ladies event, and at just 18 years old the GB junior international also became the youngest female to win this prestigious mountain race. Runner-up Pippa Maddams is the reigning British fell running champion, but was unable to match the young Scot as Buchanan summitted in 52:23, some 50 seconds up on Maddams, and carried on to more or less hold the gap all way back to the finish at Parc Padarn.

Speaking later Buchanan said, “I’m so pleased. It was a very hard race out there, but I really enjoyed it and I am particularly happy to beat some very good English girls too.”

With Lauren Jeska in third place the English girls also won the team prize with back-up from Emma Clayton, who unfortunately took a heavy tumble on her way down. Nant Peris runner Sarah Ridgway won the female Open prize and also led the Eryri ladies team to the win, with back-up from Tammy Lewis-Jones and Katrina Spinney.

Report by David Wheeler.
